Some Quick Facts

Rugby was born one day back in 1823 when William Webb Ellis picked up a soccer ball in the middle of the game and began running towards his opponents goal line. The game has since evolved into one of the most exciting sports known to the world.

  • The rugby ball resembles an American football but is slightly more round.
  • Rugby Union teams have 15 members of their team on the field at one time.
  • Games are 80 minutes long with 40 minute halves.
  • Rugby was last played in the Olympics in 1924. The United States are the reigning Gold Medal Champs. Rugby will be returning to the 2016 Olympics in the form of Rugby 7s.
  • Some famous former rugby players are: Sean Connery, JFK, Chris Farley, Bill Clinton, and Che Guevara to name a few.
  • Basketball was invented by a rugby coach in 1891. Dr. James Naismith was looking for an indoor activity to keep his players conditioned during the winter, and thus basketball was born.

I’ve never played, I have some questions…

Q. Isn’t rugby a sport for large Amazon women?

A. No, rugby has 15 positions, and each position is built for varying size, fitness and speed of players

Q. I’ve never played rugby before, are you sure I should join?

A. Of course, the only way you will learn the game is by playing. We will gladly teach the game. Half of our girls had never played before joining the team.

Q. When are practices and games?

A. Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays and games are on Saturdays. Practice and game locations vary but you can obtain information by talking to a Renegade or emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Q. What are the dues?

A. Rookie dues are $25 for your first season

Q. What should I bring to practice?

A. Bring shorts, cleats (without a front-toe spike),a mouthguard, a sturdy shirt and some water. (or H20 if you’d prefer)

Q. Will I get hurt playing?

A. Rugby is a contact sport, and you will certainly get some bumps and bruises. We will teach how to tackle and how to take a tackle to minimize injuries. Safety is our main concern.
